Air Liquide’s full range of gases, equipment and total gas management solutions are geared to help reduce the cost of downstream oil and gas operations while enhancing safety, operational efficiency and quality. We supply hydrogen gas to produce low-sulphur transportation fuels and to upgrade low-quality refinery feedstocks. Air Liquide also provides extensive analysis solutions to evaluate virtually any mixture of hydrocarbons to ensure contamination-free delivery of feedstock calibration standards and pure gases. Our offer for the downstream sector includes a variety of specialty gases and nitrogen pumping services specifically designed to support turnarounds in refineries, as well as major maintenance and construction projects. For example:

  • Fuel desulfurisation and conversion into lighter products in the refining industry requires a large volume of hydrogen to break up heavy hydrocarbons
  • Gasification and catalytic cracking processes using large quantities of oxygen
  • Blanketing, purging and drying are essential to ensure the safety of installations

To supply customers with hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and argon, we leverage our skills and technologies to deliver reliable and competitive gases with the appropriate supply mode on-site, regardless of volumes.

Over 300,000 Nm³ per hour is the total capacity of hydrogen production from the two large-scale units for the Yanbu refinery in Saudi Arabia

Our coverage of the main industrial basins and pipeline network allow us to further optimise the reliability of supply. This way, our customers can focus on their core business.

Air separation units (ASUs) compress, liquefy and distill air to separate it into its various components: nitrogen, oxygen, and rare gases (argon, neon, krypton and xenon).

Steam methane reformers (SMR) produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide through steam reforming. Hydrogen is typically used in the oil- refining process for hydrodesulphurization and to convert heavy crude oil into cleaner burning transportation fuels.

Both ASUs and SMRs are designed and built using the Group’s latest technologies, providing both high reliability and energy efficiencies.

Cogeneration consists of simultaneously and efficiently producing electricity and steam, generally by consuming natural gas and water. The electricity is typically supplied to the local network while the steam is required for certain industrial processes. Cogeneration is an environmentally virtuous process, since it avoids energy losses by harnessing the heat emitted during electricity production to produce steam.
